The Best Beginner Workouts: Starting Your Cardio Journey

If you’re starting your cardio journey, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, cardio workouts are not one size fits all. What works for someone else may not work for you. Second, you can start out with one of the beginner workouts and move up in intensity from there. And finally, don’t be afraid to mix things up. Cardio workouts can become dull if you repeat the same exercises every workout session.

Here are some of the best cardio workouts for beginners:

– Walking: Walking is a great way to get started with cardio. It’s low impact, requires no equipment other than a good pair of shoes, and can be done outside or inside on a treadmill or elliptical trainer. Start with a slow pace and gradually increase your speed as you get more comfortable.

Jogging: Jogging is a slightly more intense cardio workout than walking. If you’re new to jogging or haven’t done it in a while, start with shorter distances until you get used to it, and gradually increase your distances as you build up your endurance.

Additional health benefits of jogging:

  • Strengthen the bones
  • Build leg muscles (quads, hamstrings, and glutes)
  • Improves cardiovascular health
  • Eliminates stress and anxiety
  • Improves sleep

Cycling: Cycling is another excellent cardio workout for beginners. You can do it indoors or outdoors. Most cities have pathed trails to ride on designed for walking, jogging, and cycling. Start with a few miles and work your way up.

A stationary bike is another great option if you’re just getting started. Stationary bikes provide resistance to work against rather than your own body weight, giving your body time to adjust to a non-impact exercise. If you have joint problems, riding a bike may be the best way to get started.

Swimming: Swimming is a great cardio workout for beginners because it’s low impact and can be done at any pace. Start with a slow pace and gradually increase your speed as you get more comfortable.

Other health benefits of swimming:

  • Swimming relieves tension and stress while also leaving swimmers feeling “mentally refreshed.”
  • Swimming burns a ton of calories, with one study finding that 30 minutes of front crawl burned 488 calories, the equivalent of 9 minutes per mile of running.
  • You can exercise often. Swimming is more popular among exercisers than other forms of higher-impact exercise because of its low impact.
  • Swimming also helps to build muscle. Swimming increases muscle mass, strong lungs, and an excellent aerobic system despite being done in an essentially weightless environment.

Intensity Monitoring

Keep an eye on your workout intensity. To help with this, you can use the perceived exertion scale, target heart rate zones, or the talk test. Adjust the workout’s intensity to your fitness level as needed.

By using the rate of perceived exertion (RPE), which uses an intensity scale of 1-10, you will be able to finish the workout and stay in your comfort zone

Choose a pace that you can maintain for the duration of the workout. It doesn’t matter how slow you go; the goal is to finish the training and stay within your comfort zone.

  • RPE level 3: You are relaxed, but you are breathing more heavily than when not exercising.
  • RPE level 4: You’re starting to sweat a little but still able to hold a full conversation with no noticeable effort.
  • RPE level 5: You are less comfortable and sweating more, but you can still speak clearly.
  • RPE level 6: Talking is more difficult now, and you’re out of breath.

As a general rule of thumb, stop working out if you can’t talk, feel dizzy, or have any sharp pains. If you don’t feel better after a rest, make an appointment with your doctor.
